The Cleveland Cavaliers are currently in the Process of looking for a new head coach and there have been a lot of names linked to the franchise that we will break down each one right here. Per source, the Cavs are waiting till after the draft lottery to interview candidates. Names currently linked to the Cavs coaching search include: John Calipari, George Karl, Lionel Hollins, Alvin Gentry, Mark Price, Adrian Griffin, Mike Fratello, Fred Hoiberg, Vinny Del Negro and Mark Jackson... Update you can add: David Vanterpool, Tyronn Lue, and Nate McMillian
John Calipari
Coach Cal has already said he isn't going to the NBA, but my source says don't rule out Calipari just yet. Coach Cal has expressed how he'd like to coach LeBron James, who would certainly be on his way back to Cleveland if Calipari is the next coach of the Cavs. Apparently the Cavs owner Dan Gilbert has met with Coach Cal twice already and the Cavs remain extremely interested in hiring the University of Kentucky coach to become the next Cavs coach.
Fred Hoiberg
The Iowa State Head Coach and former NBA player will definitely be a NBA coach at some point in his career, the question is just when? Hoiberg runs the perfect system for what Griffin is trying to do, he is a brilliant coach and would definitely be a great hire for the Cavs
Vinny Del Negro
Is connected to Griffin going back to Phoenix, and was a quality coach when he was in the league. Never was able to get over that hump with his teams though on winning the big playoff series.
George Karl
George Karl has come out and said he wants to Coach the Cavs and loves All-Star PG Kyrie Irving. He once led the Cavs to the playoffs after a 2-19 start. That was during the early 1980s. Since then, Karl has recorded a number of achievements with a number of different teams. That included being named NBA Coach of the Year after leading the Nuggets to a franchise-best 57 wins in 2012-13. Karl is a great basketball coach and a great basketball mind.
Lionel Hollins
Lionel Hollins knows defense. He also knows how to get the most out of young players, as evidenced by his work with Mike Conley and Marc Gasol in Memphis. However, the former Grizzlies head coach didn’t just burn bridges after being fired by Memphis; he absolutely blew them to little pieces. He may need to show that he can temper his fiery demeanor, especially in his dealings with NBA executives, before he is handed the Cavs’ job outright. Hollins has also expressed his interest in coaching the Cavs.
Alvin Gentry
Another former Suns coach whom Griffin supposedly respects, Gentry is another up-tempo guy who is often well-liked by his players. That counts for a lot. And a lot of people around the league will tell you Gentry is a bright basketball mind with a winning personality. He's coached at least parts of 12 seasons in the league and compiled a 335-370 record.
Mike Fratello
Another former Cavs coach with an amazing track record on getting his teams to the post-season. Coach Fratello has also publicly announced that he would love to help the Cavs organization in any possible role including Coaching. Cavs would be wise to at least talk to the great coach, who has currently been coaching the Turkey National team and have the qualified for the World Championship. Fratello is a top basketball mind and would be a great hire for this team.
Mark Jackson
A quality coach who developed a young team in Golden State. However he has been named "not a strong candidate" for the Cavs Job. Jackson did nothing but improve the Warriors and develop young talent, which is the type of coach the Cavs need, however Jackson was said to have issues with people in the front office, which ultimately cost him his job. I think that he definitely deserves an interview for this job.
Adrian Griffin
Griffin’s name has emerged as a top candidate according to other NBA writers. If the Cavs are really looking to rebuild from the ground up while keeping their focus on the defensive side of he ball, Griffin could be their man.
Mark Price
The former Cavs star PG is currently an assistant for the Charlotte Bobcats (Hornets) and could be a home town favorite candidate and an interesting candidate for the job.
Nate McMillan
Currently the Pacers Associate head coach, McMillan who had successful stints in Seattle and Portland could be on the Cavs list according to sources. He's currently focusing on the Eastern Conference Finals and hasn't reached out about any openings yet but keep an eye on McMillan who could be come a candidate
David Vanterpool
Vanterpool has been an assistant coach for the Portland Trailblazers for the past two season under Head Coach Terry Slots. Prior to joining the Trailblazers Vanterpool spent two years as an assistant under Sam Presti with the Thunder. Also has experience as a player and assistant coach overseas with CSKA Moscow.
Tyronn Lue
Lue is currently an assistant coach with the Clippers under Head Coach Doc Rivers. Prior to joining the Clippers this season, he spent four seasons as an assistant for Rivers with the Celtics. Lue also spent 11 years in the NBA mainly as a backup point guard.
John Calipari
